It is the institution, an autonomous section, which brings together the main islands of Europe, the Mediterranean and other continents; the Statute was signed in the year 2000 by representatives of the various islands of the world: it constitutes the reference body for the Memories and Insularity area.
The main purpose is to establish the Charter of the Islands of the World; to create opportunities for discussion between operators and scholars of island phenomena; to develop tools for reading the islands and the needs of their inhabitants through active and participatory research methodologies; to enhance the cultural heritage (artistic, environmental, architectural and archaeological) of the islands. In 1999, the United States of the World opened its first thematic office in the Aeolian Islands, on Lipari, and since that year has carried out a series of activities to safeguard the unique values of insularity as the custodian of the memories of humanity.
